In good lighting situations, you could turn off the flash and adjust the white balance if you have that option (that's what I usually do with my D-580 Zoom). The only problem is that it's harder to keep your picture from being blurry if the lighting isn't *perfect.*

Other than that, you could try putting a piece of tape or wax paper (or pretty much anything like that that's translucent) over the flash to help dull it a little bit.
